Trees and Things

                                                              Looks like a deserted island.
 Hi there,

Another day along the river. Can anyone ever have too many of those?

Wonderful old trees along the Parkway.

If you been reading this blog for awhile, you will know that I love trees. Unfortunately, the nasty Gypsy moth caterpillars find them attractive and tasty too. When I was out at the Parkway recently, sitting at a picnic table under a tree, the caterpillars were falling on my head. I ran to better accommodations by the water's edge.

In towns further down the highway the caterpillars have completely denuded and killed trees and are so busy munching others that the trees have lost the top quarter or more of leaves. Apparently, one adult caterpillar can chomp down one square foot of leaves a day. Parks Canada has decided to allow nature to take its course. I don't like spraying, but something should be done. It will take a really cold winter with temps to -20 to knock them back. One wonders when it will end.

Such a beautiful tree.

First wildflower or a weed a Wild Pea, I think. Second one? Last picture Spatterdock, or yellow pond lily.

 Peonies ~ I can't resist buying a bunch.

Nearly there.

Pastel on Pastelmat paper ~  Ribbons of Light 9 x 12"

Near the end of this painting I thought about adding a boat. But once the tooth of the paper is full, it's nearly impossible to add anything. Plans must be made early, I reckon.

An update on Terry Ludwig's pastels. I originally said I thought that his pastels were non toxic. I ordered a small box of his best loved colours and they did arrive with a warning.

I seem to be very partial to mountains and lakes and the sea, so I do have a few forest scenes in mind. Luckily, someone sent me several pictures that I can paint from.

For those looking for pictures to paint from. Here are two sites that provide free images:

Lately my main computer requires at least three re-boots before it works. My son, Jesse, just built a whole new computer from parts he ordered, (he's obsessed :) and, luckily, he hands down the parts from his old computer to me. He also bought me a new hard drive so I am hoping for great results.

Since Blogger no longer sends email notifications, I exported my email followers to a new feed. For those following by email you will receive notifications of my new posts from Follow.it. You will receive an email to confirm your subscription. Thank you for following. I hope all runs smoothly.

Late to the party, but I just finished setting up a Pinterest account with a few boards. I be pleased if you followed me, and, of course, I will follow back.

I generally take a July and August blog break. I will be posting on Instagram. I hope to see you there.

Be safe, well, and enjoy the summer, or the winter too!

Silhouettes

Hi there,

'Tis the season! I hope you are all having fun with your Christmas preparations, or other holiday planning.

Not my usual Tuesday post, but the good Elves won the debate and decided to post early.

Sunset

I love the beautiful shapes and silhouettes of the bare trees.  As a bonus, once the leaves have flown away, you can sometimes see the intricate nests that birds have left behind.  Often overlooked, I, for one, love the beauty of a world laid bare.

Speaking of Christmas, what would Christmas be without the redemptive tales? A Christmas Carol  and The Grinch come to mind. Tales that prove that kindness changes everything.

In my recent travels I saw the Grinch in a yard pulling the Christmas tree lights off the roof of the house.
Although I don't have a picture of that scene, I am including the Grinch that I enjoyed painting a couple of years ago for my brother-in-law who really does enjoy the tale.

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”

Dr. Seuss

 Have a very Merry Christmas!
And if you do not celebrate Christmas, enjoy your holidays!

I hope to see everyone in the New Year.

Best Wishes...

Autumn Colours

The wind has been twirling the leaves from the trees for about two weeks now, but here and there banks of colour still dazzle. With the cool temps and glorious colours popping up everywhere you look, autumn definitely rejuvenates the senses.

Lovely with the green trees as highlights.

All is Golden

Here and there an occasional flower hangs on. This one has survived several frosts.

Sometimes the play of light just stops me in my tracks.

I enrolled in a Landscape Pastel day course in September.  They provided Illustration board prepared with rough pastel ground and the ground was toned with brown paint. Not exactly, in my opinion, great for clouds because they look a bit dull.
Other boards were prepared with a gorgeous apricot colour. So beautiful, but alas, since I contemplated too long, I didn't have a chance to use one of the colourful boards because the brown board was the first on offer. First things first. Apparently there are rules even for rebels like me. :)

I did enjoy the day with a great group of people!

To the Sea

 Hi there,

It has been awhile. I hope you are all doing well!
I was off to visit with family. And those lucky people live in Nova Scotia. Have I mentioned that I    love and miss the sea? Probably only about a million times, I suppose.

A dory bobbing about the harbour in my home town.

A perfect day for sailing.

As you know,  I love old houses too. Notice the antique lantern above the door.
And look at the door! I better not get started on doors. 👀

It always pleases me to see an old house left unscathed by modern fancies.

Another beauty.

This one is for sale. I'm counting my pennies.

A hitching post perhaps?  When I went to school, I walked by it every  day.

An outside basement cellar door. Not many left now. Notice it is not locked. The house wasn't usually accessible through these cellars.

Ancient trees that have been there for probably much more than a century uprooted by hurricane Dorian. The clean up was still in progress. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

This beauty is in Lunenburg, N.S.

Nova Scotia's Ambassador The Bluenose II in Lunenburg harbour. The original Bluenose was built in 1921.
The name Bluenoser is nickname for Nova Scotians. When I was a child I was told that, long ago, (18th century) fishermen wore blue knitted mitts and they would sometimes, while fishing from their dories, swipe their misty noses with their blue mitts. Of course the dye ended up on their noses. Hence Bluenoser.

Black Rocks, N.S.

Rock weed, or sea weed. What a gorgeous colour!

My lovely niece, Marci.

I thought I might stay and sell seashells by the seashore, but, alas, it was not to be.

May Days

Hi there,

What's new? Around here we have finally thrown of the bow lines of winter and are eager for all things green bright and beautiful. I've been dreaming of flowers, seeking them out and planting my containers. Although with a fresh crop of newly fledged blackbirds in the area, it's been fun and games. Well, mostly games. They have a ton of energy and fly in whenever the mood strikes them to tear my plants to pieces. So I've also planted a few more Canadian flags to scare them away. The birds will likely leave their nest soon to soar over the wilds, so I'm sure my plants will spring back and life will sail on. If not, well, there will be plants for me and some for the birds.

Did I mention I love trees? Well, probably, but to reiterate I am a tree hugger.  Did you know that trees protect each other. In other words, they have each others backs/trunks. For example, if I was the tree to the far left and my neighbour to the far right was in need of water, I would ship some water over to her/him. Amazing! They parley via their root systems. So that means they definitely communicate,  show empathy, and have compassion, etc. Rather like humans.  Yes, Virginia it's a living, wondrous world!

This majestic old pine has been around awhile.
I think these are Elm trees.

I stood with my back against this one for awhile, communing with nature/ trading tall tales.  :)

The highs.
The colour of spring. What a sight for sore eyes!

Wild Violets

I am pleased that people are not waging immediate war on their dandelions this year. They provide the first sup of nectar for foraging bees.

Below pictures from gardens that crossed my path.

And lastly, this wonder. One of many glorious old homes in the town I was visiting.
I was tempted to rap on the door and beg entry.

Look on high at the Widow's Walk/Watch. In the 19th century the lady of the house would often go up there to search the sea (in this case from the Great Lakes and then up the river) to see if her husband's ship was steaming home. In those days, unfortunately, many sailing ships were lost, hence the all to apt name.
